Mental lexicon in the mirror of word associations. The first- and foreign-language acquisition of teenagers

This study investigates the composition of the mental lexicon of secondary school students with
the word association method in their first language and in their first foreign language (English).
The study analyses the length and word class of activated words, the distribution of semantic
categories, and word-retrieving strategies in both languages. Participants of the analysis are
tenth- and twelfth-grade students from classes with a regular curriculum and from classes with
a higher number of foreign language lessons. The study analyses the results from both linguistic
and pedagogical perspectives.
