Abstract

Reading and learning are closely interconnected not only in primary and secondary education
but also in higher education, as university students acquire a substantial portion of information
through the processing of academic texts. Academic success in higher education largely depends
on students’ reading habits related to scholarly texts, as well as on the conscious and reflective
application of reading strategies during text processing. The aim of the present study is to explore
university students’ reading habits and strategies when engaging with academic texts, with
particular attention to differences between students majoring in Hungarian studies and in other
disciplines. The research was conducted through an online questionnaire survey, which forms
part of an online competency assessment tool developed within the framework of the ‘Advanced
Language Use’ (Nyelvhasználat Felsőfokon) umbrella project. The study examined the frequency
with which students read academic texts, the types of academic genres they are familiar with, the
platforms they typically use for reading, and the strategies they use when processing academic
texts, including global, problem-solving, support, and digital strategies. A total of 247 university
students participated in the study. The results indicate that university students regularly engage
with academic texts; however, not all genres are equally familiar to them. The data also show
a clear preference for reading texts in digital formats. The most notable differences between
Hungarian and non-Hungarian language students were observed in the use of reading strategies: students with Hungarian studies demonstrated more frequent and more conscious use of
strategies across several domains. The findings provide a more detailed understanding of the
characteristics of early-stage university students’ academic reading practices. Furthermore, the
results underline the importance of developing reading comprehension—particularly disciplinespecific academic literacy—in higher education, an area that is often neglected in instructional
practice.
