Abstract

Research into oral communication in higher education is of critical importance, as it contributes
to a deeper understanding of pedagogical discourses and to the development of professional
communication skills. This study aims to present an assessment tool designed to examine the
characteristics, various professional activities, and methods of classroom communication in
higher education. The authors have developed a tool which is not only suitable for recording
language use in classroom communication but also enables participants to reflect on their own
communication practices, thereby identifying areas for development in professional language
use. The study outlines the theoretical background of the RED (Reflective Discourse Analysis)
assessment tool, as well as the steps involved in its construction and application. The tool is
based on the analysis of video recordings of various types of communicative activities occurring
in higher education settings, and on related self-assessment, involving both instructors and
students. Accordingly, the methodological and theoretical foundations of the RED assessment
tool draw on discourse analysis and classroom research, while its application is shaped by an
approach characteristic of applied linguistics research conducted outside formal academic
contexts. The results produced by the RED assessment tool can be effectively applied both in
research and in practice, as the individual communicative features and challenges identified
in the video recordings, together with the insights gained through professional reflection, may
provide a foundation for further analyses and the targeted development of instructional materials
and courses.
