It is general experience in the university teaching of phonetics that university students create
a negative prejudice against phonetics at the beginning of the course. Students have generally
been observed to forget what they learn about phonetics in secondary school, because they
consider it too dry and boring. At the same time, they form many good observations and raise
many questions. This paper shows examples, exercises and experiments in order to diversify
the curriculum. Our aim is to show that our phonetic knowledge can be applied in everyday life.
Furthermore, we also want to show its relevance for other fields of linguistics. These exercises do
not require extra preparation time of the teacher. Nevertheless, our experience shows that they
increase the adventure and efficiency of learning.
