Abstract

The present paper has been written as resource material for a workshop on teaching Hungarian,
which primarily focuses on teaching grammar from a functional linguistic perspective. The paper
consists of two sections: a theoretical part and a practical part with a series of exercises. The
theoretical part briefly introduces the general principles of functional linguistics. Then it illustrates
the main principles of functional-cognitive linguistics related to the perspective and iconic nature
of the language. The practical part provides functional grammar exercises thematically organised
in a ‘ready to teach’ form. The two sections are linked together with questions concerning the
relation between functional linguistics and teaching practice.
