Text-production abilities and text-linguistic knowledge of eleventh-grade students

The study presents the results of an investigation about the text-production abilities and
text-linguistic knowledge of high-school students, and the relation between these two. Text
production was examined through formal letter writing, while text-linguistic knowledge was
investigated through knowledge achievement tests written by the students. Similarly to the results
of international studies, the participants performed at an average level in the text-production
task. However, they achieved low results in the test measuring text-linguistic knowledge. The
quantitative analysis of the results has shown significant relations between the level of textlinguistic knowledge and certain features in the letters of the students. The findings indicate that
the more text-linguistic knowledge the students have, the more effective texts they produce. This
investigation has proved how necessary it is to develop linguistic knowledge and competences
at the same time in mother tongue education.
