Characteristics and factors influencing postural control in Down syndrome

Background and objectives: Effective posture control is essential for activities of daily living and plays a crucial role in special education. The fragmented ability profile of individuals with Down syndrome —affecting motor, cognitive, and other skills—can impact postural control. This study aims to explore the factors influencing postural control in individuals with Down syndrome, drawing on findings from the international literature.
Methods: A literature review was conducted using the ERIC, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. Studies assessing and describing the characteristics of postural control, balance, and spatial orientation in individuals with Down syndrome were reviewed.
Results: Postural control in individuals with Down syndrome is influenced by syndrome-specific biomechanical factors, as well as distinct motor control and sensory strategies compared to individuals with typical developmental. Additionally, differences are observed in spatial orientation and the cognitive control of movement and posture, particularly in dynamic situations.
Conclusion: Understanding and examining the factors influencing postural control may be important, whether in supporting our clients in activities of daily living or planning developmental strategies and training. The methodological approaches and research findings summarized in the study can be integrated into special education practice, particularly in assessment and motor development.
