There is a lack of psychologically focused services available for people with mild and moderate intellectual disability (ID), especially in the Hungarian healthcare system. Even though the incidence rate of psychological disorders is higher in this population, the limitations of the care system and the incomplete knowledge and little experience of professionals make it difficult to adequately support those people. Our study reviews the characteristics of the people with ID and their impact on consultation processes, identifies relevant intervention areas, and presents the psychologist's role in supporting mental health. Based on our experience, we formulate the practical challenges of the applicability of psychological consultation, as well as the related ethical and methodological dilemmas. We point out the importance of a multidisciplinary approach and targeted (further) training of professionals to improve the quality of care.
