And what motivates YOU? – Understanding and communicating: the cornerstones of quality support for people with autism

Abstract

During my presentation at the 51st MAGYE National Professional Conference, I presented an eventful excerpt from the story of Gabó, a young man with autism. First, I highlighted his exciting personality, explained what challenging behaviours we investigated and what special interests motivated him to exhibit these behaviours. I detailed how we exploited his special interests to support his social communication skills and to prevent the challenging behaviour that occurred almost daily. I shared with my colleagues the questions that arose in connection with the case, some of the answers that supported Gabó's development, and finally I discussed the results.
