Abstract

Background and Objectives: The generations of the digital age, particularly Generation Z and Alpha, face new challenges that significantly influence their behaviour and mental health. Disorders of behavioural regulation, such as certain symptoms of ADHD, anxiety disorders, and self-esteem issues, are increasingly prevalent, especially among younger generations. This study aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the neurobiological and sensory processing background of these regulatory disorders, as well as the possibilities for prevention and intervention.

Method: The research is based on a narrative literature review, including an analysis of neurobiological processes such as the functioning of the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala, as well as an overview of sensory processing disorders. The study particularly emphasizes the consequences of changes in the digital environment on the development and persistence of behavioural regulation disorders.

Results: The findings indicate that the stimulus-saturated environment of the digital age, along with sensory processing disorders, is closely associated with the increasing prevalence of behavioural problems. Neurobiological factors, such as dysfunctions in the dopaminergic system, as well as environmental and epigenetic influences, contribute to the emergence of ADHD, anxiety, and depressive symptoms.

Conclusions: The study highlights that generation-specific prevention and intervention strategies, such as digital detox programs, therapies supporting sensory processing regulation, and technology-based solutions, can serve as effective tools for managing these behavioural regulation disorders. Future research should focus on the neurobiological and epigenetic effects of the digital environment.
