Abstract

The importance of comprehensive and objective measurement of resilience is emphasized by numerous authors, yet currently in Hungary there is no self-report measure suitable for the 5-9 age group. Our pilot study was aimed at a preliminary examination of the Hungarian adaptation of the Children and Youth Resilience Measure for ages 5-9. Our goal was to linguistically validate the Hungarian translation of the questionnaire and assess whether completing the questionnaire poses difficulty for the 5-9 age group. We examined language comprehension and encountered difficulties during completion in a sample of preschoolers and elementary school children from Pest County (M = 7.50 years, SD = 1.20, N = 83). The study showed that some questions need to be illustrated with specific examples to facilitate understanding. To ease completion, it is advisable to mark questions with different colors and to incorporate short breaks during the administration of the questionnaire to reduce monotony. We removed one item from the questionnaire as it was irrelevant to the five-year-old population in Hungary. Following the proposed modifications, we consider the questionnaire suitable for assessing the resilience of Hungarian children in this age group.
