Examining Parents’ Views on pre-school children’s value expectations, perceived characteristics and favourite Disney Princesses

Abstract

Opinions differ on the power and direction of the influence of the media, but researchers agree that the development of children’s thinking about gender can also be influenced by the media. In our questionnaire survey, we investigated how parents see their children’s favorite Disney Princesses (DP): whether there is a connection between the children’s personality traits, the parents’ value preferences and the character of the favorite princesses. Based on the opinions of the 1310 participating parents, we found that most children who know DPs are familiar with the various social representation of women through the different protagonists of the stories, although boys seemed to prefer different DPs from girls. Our study suggests that the parents’ own preferences, their characterization of their child and the value-based expectations they place on the children are also determined by the gender of the child and are related to the Disney character that they see as their children’s favourite.
