Abstract

Preschool years are decisive in the development of identity and ego. In this study, therefore, the development path of preschool years will be mainly presented in several aspects completing the typical way of development with the experience of changes in identity of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The development of children’s gender identity with ASD is underresearched, usually presenting individual cases (Mukkades, 2002; Schalkwyk, Klingensmith and Volkmar, 2015).

A small case study (N = 4) researched what characteristics of the evaluation of gender identity of preschool children with autism spectrum disorders could be noticed. According to the experience of conversations and collective games with high functioning autistic preschool boys (between 5–7), their gender identity followed the "typical" way of development.
