Abstract

In this study, I examine Mariann Tallián’s manuscript, The Lily Princess – Based on the Legend of Margaret of the Árpád Dynasty, which is currently awaiting publication, from three perspectives: its place among lower primary reading materials, its relationship with other children’s books about Margaret of the Árpád Dynasty, and its local historical significance. The work can serve as a supplement to textbook materials on the Middle Ages, in line with the representation of the Middle Ages in the National Curriculum and the framework curriculum. Like other children’s publications, it draws on the Hungarian legend of Margaret as its source but diverges from the „atoning sacrifice” narrative, instead portraying its heroine as driven by a sense of mission. Her nuanced characterization includes imperfections and everyday situations that young readers can relate to. The study also explores local historical aspects through the representation of Margaret Island. I analyse the depiction of sacred spaces in The Lily Princess and highlight the author’s efforts to ensure authenticity in portraying the monastery and church. Finally, I demonstrate how a historical walk can be incorporated into educational pedagogy, outlining the narrative of a four-stop itinerary and detailing the tasks associated with the Church of the Assumption.
