One of the worst consequences of the introduction of the National Core Curriculum 2020 (NCC 2020, NAT in Hungarian) was felt in Environmental Studies Elementary science has become the subject with the smallest number of classes in primary school; it is taught only in 3rd and 4th grade and only in one class per week. This time frame is hardly enough for acquiring the basic knowledge of the area, to say nothing of teaching all the factual material specified by the NCC and the Framework Curriculum. Consequently, teachers have to find alternative ways to overcome these unrealistic requirements. Some educators try teaching Science in 1st and 2nd grade at the expense of other subjects. Others are satisfied with the fact that Science does not appear in these earlier years. These various opinions are reflected in our primary teacher interviews. Our research offers a quantitative diagnostic assessment that we conducted with 3rd grade students in the 2021/2022 and the 2022/23 school years (latter taught according to NCC 2020). We made an attempt to observe any differences in the level of their knowledge as a result of the altered curriculum. More than 2000 students participated in both years. The data processing of the first school year is complete, the second one is in progress. It is clear that the results show a downward trend, the scale and details of which are yet to be determined. Our basic aim with this survey is to define those subject areas that cause the biggest problems for students. As a result, we need to specify the long-term consequences of these less developed areas and what transfer effects will emerge in future grades.
