Abstract

There number of research studies on timbre perception is limited, and only a few have investigated to what extent preschool music education can support the development of language skills. The aim of our study was to investigate the development of the perception of timbre in children aged 5-9 years. Our pilot study developed an online timbre perception test which was completed by 5-7-year-old preschool and 6-9-year-old primary school children (n=118; 47% girls). Data were recorded in the Electronic Diagnostic Assessment System (eDia). The reliability of the test, Cronbach’s alpha=0.822, was found to be adequate. The mean performance of the children on the timbre perception test was 76.44%, (SD=16.65). More than 80% of the sample answered the questions in the natural sounds’ subtest better than the questions on the musical sounds subtest (71%). With a background questionnaire, we explored the relationship between timbre perception and some background variables. First grade students performed significantly worse than kindergarten children (F=9.796, p=0.000). One-third of the participants were music school students who performed significantly better on the whole test (t=2.482, p=0.015), the musical sounds subtest (t=2.371, p=0.019) and the natural sounds’ subtest (t=2.070, p=0.041). Our findings may contribute to a more detailed understanding of the characteristics of children’s timbre perception and help to develop timbre hearing with the help of an objective measurement tool, and hopefully also improve their reading comprehension skills.
