The Reviewing Process
(Valid from Vol. 8 No. 2, 2020)
The Journal of Early Years Education publishes only original, peer-reviewed work. Both Author(s) and nominated independent referee(s) participate anonymously in the process of preparing the publication. About the Peer Review Process
Peer review is vital to the quality of published research. All submitted articles are evaluated by at least two independent reviewers (and may be also reviewed by the editor). Feedback from the peer reviewers contribute to the editor’s decision on whether to accept or reject the article for publication.
What is peer review and why is it important?
Peer review is defined as the “critical assessment of manuscripts submitted to journals by experts who are not part of the editorial staff”. Ninety percent of authors think that peer review improved the quality of their article (Sense About Science Peer Review Survey). Peer review ensures the integrity of science (as well as the quality of the journal) by excluding invalid or low-quality research.
How does it work?
IEEE policy requires at least two qualified reviewers evaluate a submitted article before the editor can reach a decision. (IEEE Publication Services and Products Board (PSPB) Operations Manual Section 8.2.2.A.4).
1. The journal editor invites reviewers who are experts in the article’s subject matter to evaluate the article and provide valuable feedback.
2. Reviewers comment on a variety of points such as whether the study is well designed or if the results are too preliminary. Reviewers can help authors hone key points, identify and resolve errors, and generate new ideas.
3. The reviewers’ feedback informs the editor’s decision on whether to accept or reject the article.
Our journal provides double-anonymous review, where neither the author nor the reviewers are aware of each other’s identity (however there may be cases where identity of the author cannot be hidden).
This method of review process ensures that the reviewer can give an honest and impartial evaluation of the article.
What are editors and reviewers looking for?
The papers for the Studies section, the Thematic section, and the Workshop section are reviewed by two reviewers, while items for the Review and the Boarderless section are reviewed by one reviewer well acquainted with the topic. Both Author(s) and nominated independent referee(s) participate anonymously in the process of preparing the publication. Review is made through an on-line platform by two reviewers, where author is informed about the result. If the paper is rejected by both referees, the paper, whether amended or not, will not be published. In the case of one positive and one negative review, the Journal will send the text to a third reader. In the case of two positive reviews, the Author will modify the text in accordance with any recommendation(s) by the referees. If the latter accept the Author's amendments, the Journal will publish the paper. The Author will be sent the reviews anonymously (without the names of the reviewers).
