Abstract

Investigating developmental and pedagogical events in their natural contexts represents an important part of the effective assessment of preschool integration and inclusion. Observation, which can be used for describing child-child and child-teacher interactions, is a useful method of this issue. This paper gives an overview of the methodological background regarding observation, followed by the listing of several possible methods of observing the behaviour of children. A review is provided on researches implemented in the field of preschool integration and inclusion. Studies with the purpose of observing interactions are highlighted, since we take the observation of participants in their habitual environment – i.e. classroom – as a key factor. Elements of classroom settings have also been included in our assessment, considering that interactions occur in this context; the structure of the environment has an influence on interactions as well. The above discussed approaches are worth assessing from the aspect of the planning processes and awareness of preschool teachers.
