Abstract

The author made a research on the appearance of thoughts about women in late nineteenth century’s pedagogical journals, with special focus on preschool teaching as a possible female profession of the era. The paper starts with general thoughts about women’s education which is followed by a deeper analysis of the journal’s content. The appearance of women in public thinking is studied along three main topics: their roles in society at the time, the content and practical issues of girl’s education, their possible profession and the thoughts about women’s shortcomings in that period. The possible ’female career‘ of the era is presented in a separate chapter, including the entrance to preschool teaching, their training and requirements against them. The examination of the topic was based on the following journals: Nemzeti Nőnevelés, Kisdednevelés and Kisdedóvók és gyermekkertésznők lapja, published between 1880–1885.
