The present study offers insight into the foreign language tests that are available or compulsory for primary and secondary school students in Hungary. Four language tests are discussed: the foreign language proficiency test in English and German for 6th and 8th graders; the target language test in English, German, and Chinese for the dual-language school students; the school-leaving exams in foreign languages; and the state language exams, including the accredited and junior ones. The exams are explored form several aspects such as their aims and specifications, the student results achieved in the tests, and the benefits and potential drawbacks they may yield.
