The study examines the theoretical frameworks for text reading and music reading, and the connection between these skills. In addition, this study presents the results of two Hungarian music skill tests for the development of music reading. Music reading and text reading are similar to the linguistic and musical perceptions needed to learn them. The language and music skills required for their functioning can also be paralleled, and the degree of their development can be characterized by a similar approach. One of the most important pedagogical challenges of today is to improve students’ reading comprehension. In this process, music education can help, such as the cognitive development behind the acquisition of music reading skill. However, these opportunities are still poorly exploited.
