Challenges and possibilities in music education for children: Prologue for the thematic issue

This study is the prologue for the thematic issue, Music education for children, which is looking for ways to reform music education in Hungary. This prologue describes the aims of the issue and gives a brief account of its studies. There are eight studies in the Thematic column and one more in the Workshop column. All of them focus on the current issues in music education. On the one hand, the studies explore the characteristics of music education and learning in Hungary these days. On the other hand, they are seeking to answer the current challenges. The primary focus is on Music lessons at the elementary and middle school. The authors are all members of the MTA-SZTE Music Education Research Group. The studies of this issue review the first results of this newly formed Research Group.
