Absztrakt
A Chosŏn-kor buddhistákat háttérbe szorító és korlátozó konfuciánus időszakát követően a japán gyarmati uralom kezdetén a japán gyakorlatra jellemző szerzetesi házasság lehetősége valóságos alternatívaként jelent meg a koreai buddhisták számára a huszadik század elején. Míg a szakirodalomban gyakran a japán gyarmati örökség elnyomó emlékét látják ma is a papi házasságban, addig a korabeli dokumentumok elemzésével sokkal összetettebb kép rajzolódik elénk. A koreai értelmiségiek közül leglátványosabban a korszak egyik jelentős személyisége, Manhae Han Young’un (1879−1944) koreai buddhizmus megreformálását sürgető szisztematikus írása, a Chosŏn Pulgyo yusinnon 朝鮮佛敎維新論 (Értekezés a koreai buddhizmus helyreállításáról) című mű a cölibátus gyakorlatával szembeni polémia és a papi házasság gyakorlatának engedélyeztetése érdekében megfogalmazott tizenharmadik pontjának bemutatásával és körülményeivel kapcsolatban láthatjuk, hogy érvelésében konfuciánus tanultsága, személyisége és élete ugyanúgy szerepet játszik mint a korszak haladónak vélt ideológiái, a szociáldrawinizmus és a modernizmus, a demokrácia gondolatai. De a szerzetesek mindennapi életét és körülményeit feltáró elsődleges dokumentumokból az is kiderül, hogy a házasulási hajlandóságot a japán gyarmati rendszerben bevezetett új örökösödési szabályok is nagy mértékben befolyásolták.
