NOTICE TO AUTHORS OF THE JOURNAL FIRST LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY (ANYANYELV_PEDAGÓGIA)

Checklist for Manuscript Submission

Before submitting your manuscript, please ensure that it meets all the requirements listed in the checklist below. The checklist is explained in detail in the Author Guidelines.

Checklist:

• The submitted material must not have been published previously and must not be under review by another publisher.
• The manuscript must fully comply with the Publication Ethics.
• The content, style, and format must comply with these Author Guidelines.
• The manuscript must include the author details for publication (name, workplace in Hungarian and English, city of workplace, official email address, ORCID iD).
• Authors must upload two versions of the manuscript to the sections Research Articles or From the Field: one version containing all the information required by the guidelines, and one anonymized version that does not include the author’s name and contains no identifying information in the file name, the text, or the Word document properties.
• The manuscript must include the title in Hungarian and English.
• Each submission must include five keywords in Hungarian and English.
• For manuscripts submitted to the sections Research Articles or From the Field, a Hungarian and an English abstract of 1600–2000 characters are required.
• For reviews, a high-quality cover image or website screenshot in .jpg format must be attached as a separate file.
• For conference reports or research reports with photos, high-quality .jpg image files must be attached separately.
• The manuscript text must be submitted in Microsoft Word format; figures must be uploaded as separate .jpg or Excel files.
• References and the bibliography must conform to these Author Guidelines.
• The text must not contain passages from other sources without proper quotation and citation.
• The References must contain only existing sources.
• Each in-text citation must correspond to an item in the References.
• The References must include only works cited in the text.
• Where available, reference items must include the DOI identifier.
• If no DOI is available for a reference item but a URL exists, the URL and the date of access must be included.

The editorial team will reject manuscripts in the following cases:

• The topic or genre does not fit the journal’s profile.
• The manuscript does not meet the checklist requirements.
• The manuscript does not comply with the Author Guidelines.
• A check carried out with the Turnitin plagiarism‑detection software flags textual passages originating from other sources that are not quoted and not referenced in the text—and this is confirmed by human verification.
• The manuscript contains non-existent references.
• During double-blind peer review, one or both reviewers deem the manuscript unsuitable for publication.
• The author fails to revise the manuscript according to the reviewers’ comments within the deadline.

 

AUTHOR GUIDELINES

Manuscript Workflow

Anyanyelv-Pedagógia publishes primarily theoretical studies, research summaries, reviews, reports on scientific events, and practice-oriented papers (e.g., task sets, lesson plans, project descriptions). Manuscripts must be original, unpublished, and not under review elsewhere. The publication process involves several steps, from submission of the manuscript to the published article.

All submitted studies undergo anonymous peer review, and the editorial team decides on acceptance or rejection.

Only those studies may be published that have been recommended for publication by both reviewers in the double‑blind peer‑review procedure. A detailed review form is available for download. Submissions in the genres of review, report, and reader letter (i.e., for the Reviews, Viewpoints, Miscellanea, and Letters to the Editor sections) undergo internal review.

The Author is required to complete revisions by the specified deadline based on the reviewers’ reports and the editorial team’s recommendations. Together with the revised manuscript, the Author must upload the response to the reviewers to ELTE OJS, in the area titled Review, as a separate file, summarizing what was revised and how those revisions were implemented in the manuscript.

Submit manuscripts via the journal’s website, in compliance with the journal’s Privacy Policy, Publication Ethics, Copyright, and Publication Statements, and these Author Guidelines.

 Manuscript Length

The length of manuscripts (character count including spaces) varies by section and depends on the article type:

• Research Articles: 25,000–45,000
• From the Field: 20,000–40,000
• Reviews: 10,000–20,000
• Viewpoints: research/training report or introduction of a research group or organization: 10,000–30,000; review or conference report: 10,000–20,000
• Miscellanea: research/training report or introduction of a research group or organization: 10,000–30,000; review or conference report: 10,000–20,000
• Letters to the Editor: 4,000–10,000

 Author Details

Please provide the following information on the journal website:

• Author’s name
• Manuscript title
• Intended section for publication
• Name of workplace (Hungarian and English)
• City of workplace (for retirees: former workplace)
• ORCID iD (if you do not have one: register at https://orcid.org/register and populate your profile)

 Content Requirements: for the sections Research Articles and From the Field

Single Word file including:

• Author’s name
• Title in Hungarian and English
• Manuscript text structured into sections (e.g., Introduction, Conclusion), with references
• References
• Author details for publication: name; workplace (Hungarian and English); city; official email; ORCID iD
• Abstract (1600–2000 characters) and five keywords in Hungarian and English, using narrowing conceptual scopes. The first keyword is the discipline / main field (e.g., linguistics, first-language pedagogy, literary pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology).

Attachments as separate files (indicate in the text the location, number, and title of each figure):

• Figure in .doc or .jpg format
• Diagram in editable Excel or editable Word format
• Photo in .jpg format
• Appendix (e.g., lesson plan) in Word

Content Requirements: Reviews (for the sections Reviews and Viewpoints)

Single Word file including:

• The name and details of the reviewed book, journal, or website (name of author/editor-in-chief; title; name and place of publisher; publication year; page count for books)
• Subtitle provided by the reviewer in Hungarian and English
• Review text
• References

• Five keywords in Hungarian and English, using narrowing conceptual scopes. The first keyword is the discipline / main field (e.g., linguistics, first-language pedagogy, literary pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology).
• Author details for publication: name; workplace (Hungarian and English); city; official email; ORCID iD

Attachment (separate file):

• High-quality cover image or website screenshot in .jpg (For multiple figures, indicate in the text the location, number, and title of each figure)

 Content Requirements: Reports (for the sections Viewpoints and Miscellanea)

Single Word file including:

• Author’s name
• Title in Hungarian and English
• Text (with references, if any)
• References (if any)
• Five keywords in Hungarian and English, using narrowing conceptual scopes. The first keyword is the discipline / main field (e.g., linguistics, first-language pedagogy, literary pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology).
• Author details for publication: name; workplace (Hungarian and English); city; official email; ORCID iD

• Photo(s) in .jpg format (indicate in the text the location, number, and title of each figure)

Content Requirements for the section Letters to the Editor

Single Word file including:

• Author’s name
• Title in Hungarian and English
• Letter text (salutation, body, closing, date; author’s name; workplace and position; in-text references if any)
• References (if any)
• Five keywords in Hungarian and English, using narrowing conceptual scopes. The first keyword is the discipline / main field (e.g., linguistics, first-language pedagogy, literary pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology).
• Author details for publication: name; workplace (Hungarian and English); city; official email; ORCID iD

Attachments (separate files):

• Photo(s) in .jpg format (indicate in the text the location, number, and title of each figure)

Video (any section):
You may link a video hosted externally. Upload the video file in .wmv, .avi, or .mov format to a shareable platform, and provide the download link and video title.

 Manuscript Formatting

Manuscripts should be uploaded in Microsoft Word format, as .doc files.

• Font: Arial, 10 pt, normal character spacing
• Line spacing: 1.5
• Margins: 2.5 cm on all sides
• Title: centered; author name(s) centered above the title (multiple authors joined with an en dash)
• Subheading hierarchy: bold decimal numbering (e.g., 1., 1.1., 1.1.1.)
• Paragraphs: separated by a blank line (no first-line indents)
• Emphasis: Use italics for linguistic data, short examples, titles. Do not use bold for content emphasis. Longer textual examples should be in regular (non-italic) font with full-paragraph indentation.
• Document settings: No automatic hyphenation, page numbering, or any other automatic settings or style formatting in the text.

Tables and Figures

• Include editable tables in the text. Upload figures, diagrams, and photos as separate files, each named with the figure/table number.
• Figure titles do not appear inside the diagram but in the manuscript text.
• Include only those tables/figures that are explicitly referenced in the text.
• Use continuous numbering and supply a title for each.
• Tables: number and title placed above the table;
• Figures: number and title placed below the figure;
• Alignment: centered, Arial 10, italics.
• Use separate numbering sequences for tables and figures.

• The fonts in tables and diagrams are Arial; set sizes for readability.
• In table headers, capitalize initial letters of labels.
• The file name of the figure should refer to the author’s name and the figure number (e.g., Varga_1_table, Varga_1_figure).
• Indicate the source of figures originating from other authors within the figure title (with a citation).
• Photos may be published only with consent from the author, rights holder, and individuals depicted (or their legal representatives).

An in-text citation includes the surname(s) of the author(s) or editor(s), the year of publication, and—if referring to a specific chapter rather than the entire book, or if the citation marks a quotation—the page number of the cited part: (Szemere 1968), (Szemere 1968: 176).

No more than two co-authors may be named in the citation, with their surnames joined by an en dash. For three or more authors, use the term et al.: (Lukács–Pléh 2015), (Adamik et al. 2004).

When listing multiple citations, separate the items with a semicolon, and arrange them in order of publication year: (Szemere 1968; Tátrai 2017; Boronkai 2022).

Multiple works by the same author can be cited in a single reference, listed in chronological order by year. Works published in the same year are distinguished by the letters a, b, c: (Bárczi 1951a, 1951b, 1963).

Internet sources without an author are cited using Arabic numerals in parentheses: (1), (1; 2).

References (for articles written in Hungarian)

In the References section, list only the items that are cited in the text. Arrange the items in alphabetical order and format them with a hanging indent according to the examples provided. Do not abbreviate author names and do not apply special emphasis. The format of reference items: Arial font, size 10, line spacing 1.5, hanging indent (1.25 cm). Separate the elements of each reference item with periods. For online sources, provide the access link and the date of access only if the source does not have a DOI identifier. The format for the date of access: (10 September 2025).

If the given reference item is available in the Crossref system, its DOI identifier must be provided according to the examples. In this case, for online sources, neither the access link nor the access date is required. You can check whether a reference item has a DOI and, if so, what it is at the following page: https://apps.crossref.org/SimpleTextQuery

Authors are requested to cite articles from Anyanyelv-Pedagógia that have a DOI by including the DOI link at the end of the article details in the References section.

For every journal article cited, please indicate volume (Arabic numerals), issue (Arabic numerals), page range, and the DOI in accordance with the sample format, where such data are available.

Please note that all articles published in First Language Pedagogy have DOI identifiers dating back to 2008 (with the exception of the Letters to the Editor section). These DOIs can be found in the archive on the new website. When citing articles from the journal, the DOI must also be included.

Internet Sources Without Identified Authors

Internet sources without an identified author should be listed at the end of the References section, after the alphabetical entries, leaving one blank line before them.

 Additional Content and Style Recommendations

Use topic-descriptive titles; avoid promotional or call-to-action titles. Avoid overly long main titles and secondary subtitles. Decimal numbering requested in the manuscript does not appear in the published article; published hierarchy is shown by font size, weight, and colour.

Regardless of genre, include proportionate introduction, discussion, and conclusion sections. Maintain an objective scientific style; avoid personal remarks and excessive first-person usage. Avoid one-sentence paragraphs. We mark lists with a dash. Acknowledgments and funders (only if essential) appear in the final paragraph, separated from the main text by a blank line. Do not use footnotes or endnotes; integrate their content into the main text.

The articles published in this journal contribute, both in content and form, to fulfilling the journal’s mission. The aim of the journal is to support research in first-language pedagogy and to promote the development of first language education in Hungary and beyond.
