With constant development in the field of translation studies newer and newer translation competence models, revision competence models and post-editing competence models are being published (Rico & Torrejón, 2012; Nitzke et al., 2019). Having
compared a number of these three types of models we concluded that researchers consider translation, revision and post-editing competences being overlapping categories. The results of previous research (Hunnect, 2021; Sulyok, 2023) has shown that professionals share researchers’ opinion, although this view has not yet been backed up by empirical data. Therefore, this paper seeks to reduce this research gap: it aims to explore whether translation, post-editing, and revision competences show parallel development. In order to get insights into the realities of these competences we compared the aforementioned competencies of three categories of participants: first-year and second-year translation master’s students and professional translators, in the English–Hungarian language pair. It is crucial to highlight that no general conclusions can be drawn from our results due to the limited number of participants and the size of the corpus. However, they made it possible to identify certain trends which should
nevertheless later be verified by further research. The results of our paper show that the examined competencies do not show parallel development. It is also concluded that most participants’ revision competence is more advanced than their post-editing competence. The insights gained from this study can contribute to the further development of translator and interpreter training programmes, and might also indirectly contribute to high-quality texts – be it the result of translation, post-editing or revision.
