Translation studies has officially existed since 1972, but since the 1990s the amount of research and the number of research areas and topics have increased dramatically. On the theoretical side, the most important influences have come from cognitive linguistics, communication theory, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics and sociology, while on the practical side the development of corpus linguistics and the technological advances that have changed the nature of the practice of translation have played the most important role and led to the emergence of new fields of research. This article describes the new theoretical developments, the changes that have taken place in methods and research tools and some of the new research areas and topics. It discusses the risks involved in some of the new research trends and the ways in which those risks can be avoided. It calls for
further research in particular areas.
