Abstract

This paper examines two recent micro-changes in verb-object (V-O) compounds in Modern Chinese: the emergence of the “V个 (gè)N”construction and the increasing attachment of direct object to traditional V-O compounds. By analyzing these linguistic shifts within the framework of Construction Grammar and language change, this study reveals how these micro-changes reflect broader linguistic evolution and adaption, influenced by socio-cultural shifts and language contact phenomena. Additionally, the paper discusses the implications of these micro-changes for teaching Chinese as a second language, highlighting the challenges and pedagogical strategies needed to address evolving linguistic forms. This investigation not only contributes to our understanding of specific linguistic phenomena but also enriches the broader discourse on language as an adaptive system, responding to communicative needs and cultural interactions.
