This study examines the diagnostic and research tools used in speech therapy aimed at mapping
out language and speech conditions, and it summarizes experience with visual materials related
to these fields. It provides an overview of the conditions for the relevant visual representation
of linguistic content and highlights potential sources of error in image interpretation through
examples. The study supports professionals working in special education or mainstream
education in two ways. On the one hand, it offers helpful perspectives for the qualitative analysis
of results obtained from studies using visual materials and for evaluating performance. On the
other hand it formulates suggestions for creating specific diagnostic, therapeutic, and researchoriented visual materials targeting various language and speech areas, which can be useful for
both researchers and practitioners.
