Abstract

Morphological awareness which plays an equally important role in reading acquisition and the
development of text comprehension skills, refers to the ability to recognize and manipulate
morphemes, the building blocks of words. In Hungary, research on morphological awareness has
been limited to the early stages of first language acquisition, but it seems relevant to examine the
awareness of secondary school students, too. The aim of this research is to explore what tools can
be used to measure the morphological awareness of 15-year-old vocational school students and
to assess whether there is room for development within classroom settings. The study presents
a test that proved to be suitable for measuring secondary school students’ morphological
awareness and illustrates how the test participants performed before and after development. The
research demonstrates the effectiveness of the development with control group results, and then
summarizes the research and pedagogical experiences.
