Abstract

Community is a fundamental concept found in the vocabulary of several basic and applied social
sciences. However, its integration into individual disciplines does not adhere to a universally immutable interpretation. Instead, it thrives on its inherent flexibility and multifaceted approach, rendering it a fundamental concept applicable across diverse disciplines. In contemporary discourse, the concept of community has transcended the boundaries of basic and applied social sciences, extending its influence into the realms of life sciences, such as ecology and evolutionary biology, as well as engineering disciplines, such as automation and information technology. This paper traces the evolving paradigm of community in the 21st century, primarily focusing on educational and sociological perspectives. The practical intention is to go beyond the interpretation that traditionally identifies place, interest and intellectual or spiritual factors as community-shaping factors. The research interest has been guided by how the socio-technological challenges of the 21st century affect the concept of community rooted in the 20th century and what conceptions of community can be found in the broader literature and practice, especially when looking beyond the academic framework. The literature review has identified 12 distinct community concepts and corresponding definitions, each accompanied by practical examples to illustrate the living characteristics of each concept. This study aims to enhance comprehension regarding the nature and role of communities. The novelty of this paper lies in the fact that such a broad understanding of the concept of community has not been attempted before, and the 12 concepts presented can be effectively applied in the professional training of community development practitioners.
