In our writing, we aim to present a combined perspective of the psychological and speech therapy background of selective mutism. In this current, first part, we provide a brief overview of the terminology related to selective mutism, considering etiology and symptomatology. We will make the comparative description by comparing classification systems and analysing older and newer relevant literature. We present the results of psychological and speech therapy studies that can assist us in creating a more accurate differential diagnosis, and the domestic expansion of the range of the therapeutic methods. In the next, second part, we will detail the therapeutic steps.
