Abstract

György Bence, János Kis and György Márkus wrote a joint book in the early 1970s entitled How is Critical Economic Theory Possible? It was colloquially known as Anti-Capital or Überhaupt. I would prefer the former because of the critical charge, but the latter is more conversational in content: is critical economics possible at all? It would be a theory of socialism that fits into the context of the renaissance of Marxism. My thesis aims to show that the book under analysis contains two important theses: (1) such a theory is not possible following in the footsteps of Marxist theory, and (2) socialist economics is not possible or is unworkable.
