This study provides an overview of the important changes in Hungarian sign language in the last twenty years. It describes changes in the legal background, and the most important research projects and results on this topic. It gives an insight into changes of views and attitudes towards bilingual teaching in Hungary. It also highlights and analyses elements of deaf children’s language development and of sign language in the pedagogical plan at a special school for deaf children. Linguists have done outstanding work related to Hungarian sign language and they have achieved important results in the last two decades. In addition, the linguistic status of sign language has been converted into law. However, there is still a number of tasks for teachers, special education teachers and other experts related to the introduction and consolidation of bilingual teaching at deaf education institutions.
