Abstract

Narrative skills play a key role in expressing experiences, thoughts, and emotions, and thus
determine academic performance and the success of social relationships. The development of
these skills is significantly shaped by a child’s linguistic environment and the quality of their
relationship with primary caregivers. However, the spread of digitalization is transforming
children’s linguistic and communicative environment, which in turn affects the development of
their first language and narrative skills. This study reviews the main findings of both national
and international research examining the positive and negative effects of digital tool use on
narrative skills, taking into account factors such as the child’s age, the type of content consumed,
and the context of use (e.g., active vs. passive participation, parental support, and the nature
of applications). The review highlights how the appropriate use of digital tools can support the
development of narrative skills, while also addressing the potential risks associated with improper
usage.
