The Impostor Phenomenon is a complex psychological state in which highachieving individuals doubt their abilities and successes and feel as if they were deceiving others and fear of being exposed as intellectual frauds. Our research aimed to adapt the IPP30 (Impostor-Profile) questionnaire developed by Ibrahim et al. (2022) into Hungarian and verify its internal coherence.
The IPP30 questionnaire was translated into Hungarian by four experts. The Hungarian version was completed online by 311 university students. Data were analysed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis with SPSS and Jamovi. The original 30-item questionnaire structure did not function adequately on the Hungarian sample, but we could identify a shortened 15-item version, maintaining the original six-factor structure. The new Hungarian scale demonstrates excellent fit indices (CFI = 0.974, TLI=0.964, SRMR = 0.0401, RMSEA = 0.051). The Cronbach's α values for the new factors range from 0.733 to 0.928, with the total scale at 0.774.
The study confirmed that the six-factor model of the impostor phenomenon is adaptable to Hungarian. Results suggest that students in teacher training programs are more affected by the impostor phenomenon than their peers in other fields of study. Additionally, we found a correlation between social mobility and being affected by the impostor phenomenon, particularly among first-generation students whose mothers do not have a high school diploma.
