In Hungary, the importance of mentor teachers has grown significantly in the last one and half decades. Teachers usually take on the physically and mentally demanding job of mentoring on top of their other duties, accepting that they have to do considerable overwork.
Mentor teachers face specific problems when dealing with teacher candidates who are balancing the roles of student and teacher, but training and support specifically organised for mentor teachers is rare.
Recognising this gap, we implemented the "Solution-focused mentoring" pilot training programme, which aimed to (1) provide an opportunity to share and process specific situations and problems experienced during mentoring and (2) enable the acquisition of solution-focused approaches and methodological elements that can immediately be put into practice.
Our study presents the design, implementation and the impact of the training programme on the participants. Our work aims to encourage the implementation of similar programmes.
