Style Sheet

Öt Kontinens Citation System[i]

All literary and source citations, as well as all notes, should be placed in footnotes.

  1. Literary References in Footnotes

For a single author: Author year: page number. (e.g., Nagy 1988: 23.)

For a work by multiple authors: Author–Author year: page number. (e.g., Berger–Luckmann 1998: 104–105.)

For an edited volume: Editor (ed./Hg./dir.) year. (e.g., Szabó (szerk.) 2008; Lüdtke (Hg.) 2010.)

For multiple works by the same author in the same year: Differentiate them with lowercase letters of the alphabet (e.g., Tomka 2001a, 2001b). When citing multiple works by the same author, the name is only given for the first instance (e.g., Valuch 2001, 2013.).

For multi-volume works: In short footnotes, the volume number should be indicated with a Roman numeral (e.g., Braudel 2003: II. 35.).

  1. Source References in Footnotes

Source citations should follow the format appropriate for the source type (archival, manuscript, newspaper article, interview, etc.).

For archival sources: Please use a shortened form. In footnotes, first provide the official abbreviation of the archive and the identifier of the material (e.g., MNL VaML IV.401.b.). For specific documents, in addition to these, the title and date of the document must also be provided (e.g., MNL VaML IV.401.b. 12365/1940. Tanácsülési jegyzőkönyv, 1940. június 12.). The full name corresponding to the abbreviation should be provided at the end, in the list of sources.

For manuscript sources: Follow a similar format as for archival sources.

  1. List of Sources and Bibliography

3.1. Sources

After the main text, the archival sources used should be listed first. Foreign archives should always be listed by their original name, and the name of the city where the archive is located must also be provided. Beneath the archive's name, the exact name and date range of the cited archival fond or collection should be specified (the date range can only be omitted if it's a collection-type fond where only one entry exists under that name, and the date range is not necessary for precise identification). Following this – separated by a line break – manuscripts held in public collections (manuscript, map, data, or document archives) should be listed. Then, "source-type" printed publications (sourcebooks, diaries, memoirs, reminiscences, statistics, gazetteers, published maps). Next, periodicals used (not just cited for a single article). Finally, films and interviews are listed.

Examples of Source Formats:

  • Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár Vas Megyei Levéltára (MNL VaML) IV.401.b. Vas Vármegye Alispánjának iratai, 1871–1950.

  1. Other Rules:
  • Abbreviations: The abbreviations p., pp., o., old., i.m., ld., uő are not to be used. The use of "Ibid." is only permitted if the reference is repeated within the same footnote.
  • Hyphen (-) and Em-dash (–): Pay attention to the correct use of hyphens (-) and em-dashes (–). An em-dash should be used to connect two nationalities or proper nouns, and in expressions indicating a range or endpoints, meaning 'from something to something' – thus, between years and page numbers.
  • Centuries: Centuries are denoted with Arabic numerals.
  • Quotations:
    • Quotations should be enclosed in double quotation marks: „”.
    • Quotations within a quotation should be enclosed in guillemets: »«.
  • Parentheses within parentheses: Use square brackets for parenthetical remarks within parentheses.
  • Omissions in source citations: Omissions should be indicated with [...] (e.g., „[A]z alperes [Tóth Béláné] elmondása szerint.”).
  • Author's or translator's notes: Format as (A Szerző.) (A Ford.). (Emphasis – X.Y.)
  • Percentage sign: The % symbol always attaches to the number (e.g., 10%).
  • Thousands separator: For numbers 10000 and above, use a non-breaking space (CTRL SHIFT SPACE).
  • Titles: All titles in the main text are italicized, but suffixes attached to the title are not (e.g., Nyugatból - "from Nyugat").
  • Reviews: In a review, the page numbers of the reviewed book are cited in the text, in parentheses, without a period.

[i] Note: The citation system is consistent with the citation rules of the Korall Társadalomtörténeti Folyóirat (Korall Journal of Social History).
