Author Guidelines

For Authors

Öt Kontinens is the official journal of the Department of Modern and Contemporary World History of the Institute of History, Faculty of Humanities of the Eötvös Loránd University. Manuscripts for publication can be submitted to the e-mail addresses of the editors.

The manuscripts submitted must meet certain requirements. Failure to comply with any of these points will result in automatic rejection of the manuscript:

  • Manuscripts submitted for publication must be original, previously unpublished in any other journal, either digital or print media.
  • Manuscripts intended for publication should be submitted in MS-Word (.doc or .docx) format.
  • Manuscripts submitted for publication must include the author's affiliation and ORCID.
  • Formatting follows the style sheet of the Journal with particular attention to the stylistic and bibliographical requirements.
  • DOIs or URLs have been provided for the references whenever possible.
  • Manuscripts submitted for publication must include an abstract of 1,000-1,500 characters in Hungarian and English, and 5-7 keywords in both languages.

To ensure the scientific quality, works will be subjected to double-blind peer review fulfilled by two experts of the field. Originality and the relevance of the scientific information will be considered as criterions of the review process.

The Double-Blind Peer Review Process:

  1. Submitted manuscripts will be reviewed by the editors to determine if they reflect the aims and scope of the journal, and to check the appropriateness of the format. Manuscripts that do not meet the criteria outlined above will not be considered for publication, and authors will be informed of this decision.
  2. If the submitted work meets all the criteria, the editors will select two experts to evaluate the manuscript. The reviewers have 4 weeks from the date of receipt of the manuscript to prepare their review.
  3. The review process is anonymous for both the author and the reviewers.
  4. The identity of the reviewers and the content of the reviews will not be disclosed during or after the publication process. All information and messages between authors and reviewers will be communicated by the editors.
  5. Reviewers and members of the Editorial Board must keep all peer-reviewed material confidential. Reviewers and editors shall not share material submitted for review with third parties.
  6. All reviewers have expertise in areas relevant to the submitted manuscripts and have published in the field in recent years. Reviewers may be selected from among the members of the Editorial Board and experts from different research and academic institutions across the country and abroad. If the manuscript is of an interdisciplinary nature, experts in the relevant fields may also be invited to participate in the peer review process.
  7. Neither the author nor the co-authors may be reviewers of the submitted manuscript. The assigned reviewers must inform the Editorial Board of any potential conflict of interest.
  8. The completed review should include an expert analysis of the manuscript, an objective and well-supported evaluation, and constructive recommendations, following a predetermined review template. The review should conclude with a final decision on the suitability of the manuscript for publication, as follows: a) the manuscript is recommended for publication; b) the manuscript is recommended for publication after revision; c) a new round of review is required; d) the manuscript is not recommended for publication.
  9. In the case of a positive evaluation by both reviewers, the manuscript must also be approved by the Editorial Board. Authors will be notified of acceptance by e-mail. This e-mail may include a list of suggested revisions. The Editorial Board reserves the right to reject a manuscript even if a positive evaluation was given by both reviewers; authors of such manuscripts will be fully informed of the reasons for rejection.
  10. In the case of a negative evaluation by both reviewers, authors will be informed of the reasons for the rejection. In case of two conflicting reviews, the final decision regarding the manuscript will be taken by the Editor-in-Chief. In the case of disagreement between the reviewers, the manuscript may be referred to a third independent reviewer.
  11. Reviews will be sent anonymously to authors on request.
  12. Reviews will be kept for a period of 5 years.
