About the Journal

Öt Kontinens (Five Continents) is the annual history journal of the Department of Modern and Contemporary World History of the Institute of History, Faculty of Humanities of the Eötvös Loránd University. The journal was founded by István Majoros in 2003. His aim was to provide a forum for Hungarian historians interested in world history, and to deepen the international embeddedness of ELTE and Hungarian historiography in general by involving foreign authors and editors. After the retirement of the professor, in 2022, the editorial tasks of the journal were taken over by the staff of the Department under the direction of Gábor Búr, who implemented innovations for the development of the journal. Henceforth the issues of Öt kontinens will be published annually, during the first quarter of the year. Articles will be published in Hungarian, and in exceptional cases in English. Manuscripts intended for publication will be subject to a double-blind peer review procedure.

The aim of the journal is to continue to provide a forum for the academic study of world history (European and non-European), and we will only accept studies on Hungary if the manuscripts’ subject matter is presented within a global historical framework (e.g., comparative research). As such, the journal fulfils a valuable role, since it is still relatively difficult to find a forum for historical studies on world history (especially outside Europe) in Hungary. Öt Kontinens aims to accommodate a wide range of approaches, from political history to social, ideological, economic and military history, as well as interdisciplinary studies.

Each issue contains three to four thematic blocks, but we also publish occasional non-thematic studies. The journal also publishes reviews of recent academic studies and monographs on the history of Europe and the non-European world.
