In-text citations

In-text citations should be the author(s) name(s) and the year of publication. The author(s) name(s) can be a part of the sentence [... as it can be seen in White’s study (1998) the results …] or in brackets [... correlation between the two variables has been pointed out before (White, 1998), therefore …]. But most of the time it should be at the end of the sentence. Further instructions and rules:

  • The names of two authors – even in the case of foreign authors’ works – are separated by “&” from each other: (Black & White, 1998). In the case of multiple names, there should be a comma between them, and only the last one should have “&” before them: (Black, White & Brown, 1998).
  • In case of more than three names, the first time they are cited, all authors’ names should be written out (Black, White, Gray & Brown, 1998), but when mentioned again, only the first author's name has to be included, followed by “et al.” (Black et al., 1998).
  • In the case of word-by-word quotations, quotation marks should be used, and in the citation, the page number should be indicated with “p”. (White, 1998, p. 32).
  • If there are multiple works from the same author inside one bracket, the citation only needs to contain the name once, followed by the publication dates separated by commas (White, 1955, 1956a, 1956b).
  • Referring to multiple authors’ works inside one bracket, each item is separated by (;) (Black, 1988; White, 1989; Gray & Brown, 1990).
  • Inside the brackets, the authors should be in the order of publication date (Gray, 1988; White, 1989; Brown, 1990).
  • If the author published multiple works in the same year, they are distinguished by letters after the date when referring to one of them (Brown, 1988a).
  • In indirect citations, the original author’s name and publication date must be stated, followed by the phrase "as cited in" and the author who cited it in their work and its publication date. Example: (Brown, 1988 as cited in Gray, 2010). In the bibliography, only the author who cited the information has to be listed.
  • The citation is a part of the sentence, meaning that sentence-ending punctuation comes after the closed bracket. The exception is if a whole sentence is cited, then use a punctuation mark after the quote and the citation. Examples:
    • Institutions affect both motivation and behaviour (Acemoglu & Robinson, 2013).
    • "Institutions influence daily the motivation system and the behaviour of people." (Acemoglu & Robinson, 2013, p. 48).
    • "Institutions influence daily the motivation system and the behaviour of people." (Acemoglu & Robinson, 2013, pp. 48–49).
