Criminal News from Nógrád County in the Pesti Hírlap (1841–1844)

Abstract

The Pesti Hírlap, edited by Lajos Kossuth, primarily comprised five sections: editorials, a capital city column, rural (county and municipal) columns, foreign news and treatises. During the Diet of 1843–1844, the rural news was partly replaced by parliamentary reports. Information relating criminal law in Nógrád appeared in county reports (25 instances), parliamentary news, and advertisements (5 instances). Among the identified correspondents from Nógrád were Pál Szontagh and Imre Madách, who used symbols as pseudonyms to sign their authorship. Both also reported on the local debate concerning the 1843 criminal law proposal. Some assembly reports addressed national issues, such as the codification of criminal law, the death penalty, and the jury system. However, the local news proved particularly noteworthy. Correspondents highlighted proposals to prevent electoral scandals and the preparation of jurisdictional statistics. Reports also covered topics such as the cost of imprisonment, an instance of abuse of office, and the order of the tribunal sittings. Of particular interest was the coverage of the construction of the Balassagyarmat prison. The project commenced without the requisite authorisation from the Lieutenancy Council (Consilium Locumtenentiale), and an advertisement in the newspaper solicited contractors – specifically masons and carpenters – to undertake the work.
