Abstract

Research on children’s language attitude may provide important insights into first language education and language sensitisation. Children may encounter speakers whose speech differs in some ways from what they are used to. The present study focuses on pupils’ attitude towards three atypical speech types (foreign accent, r-l dyslalia, and deaf speech). The results of the survey with thirty pupils in first grade show that children are able to notice differences between various speech types and they perceive certain types more negatively. Attitudes concern not only the given speech type but also the speaker of that speech type. Proper language sensitization may contribute to the prevention of linguicism and to the development of attitudes.
