Abstract

One of the basic conditions for the success of any communicative act is the establishment of
a proper connection between the parties, i.e., creating contact. Without establishing contact,
cooperation between the participants in communication cannot take place, and without this,
communication goals cannot be achieved. Establishing a connection is particularly important
in goal- and result-oriented communicative contexts, such as classroom discourse. The aim of
this study is to provide an overview of the contact-establishing episode of classroom discourse
based on 20 video-recorded lessons. The analyses focus on the teacher’s use of phatic linguistic
elements, the discourse features of the introductory episode, and the linguistic and non-linguistic
forms of student activity. Discourse analysis, pragmatic, communication theory, and native
language pedagogy perspective contribute to the interpretation of the results. The results of the
study may help both teacher trainees and practicing teachers become more aware of and develop
their communication.
