Absztrakt

NATO’s new strategic concept was adopted by the Alliance’s leaders in Madrid on June 29, 2022, under the pressure of the ongoing war in Ukraine. The document identifies Russia as a direct and immediate military threat. At the 2023 NATO Summit in Vilnius, the Alliance approved the new regional plans designed to protect not only NATO countries but also the entire Euro-Atlantic area. Although the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, D.C. was overshadowed by the intense American election campaign, the Alliance nonetheless managed to celebrate its 75th anniversary in a dignified manner, which also marked the 25th anniversary of Hungary’s NATO membership. The article reviews the enhanced NATO presence in Eastern Europe since 2014 and evaluates NATO’s deterrence and defense policy following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It analyses the new forward defense concept for NATO’s East Wing and the main characteristics of NATO’s new force model. The paper concludes by presenting Hungary’s approach collective defense.
