Absztrakt

In the spring of 1945, World War II ended in Italy, and the two-decade-long fascist dictatorship definitively collapsed. The new Italian
political leadership was immediately with numerous challenges. One of the most important tasks of Italian diplomacy after 1945 was to establish the country’s new alliance system within the transformed international order. The central aim of democratic Italy’s foreign policy was to gain recognition for its commitment and reliability as an ally. This was not an easy task, as Italy had long been regarded with considerable distrust by its future allies. Nevertheless, in 1949 Italy achieved NATO accession and subsequently proved to be a reliable and loyal ally in every respect. It was therefore all the more surprising when serious tensions emerged between Rome and Washington over the events at the Sigonella military base. During the confrontation, armed Italian Carabinieri units faced American Delta Force commandos. These events forced the two countries to find a diplomatic solution to this conflict.
