Absztrakt

The aim of this study is to present France’s distinctive NATO policy during Charles De Gaulle’s presidency. The roots of this policy go back to the period of the Fourth Republic but became particularly evident after 1958, when De Gaulle came to power. To understand its origins, it is necessary to examine the main elements of French NATO policy before 1958. French NATO policy under De Gaulle’s presidency was shaped by both the experiences of the period between 1949–1958 – marked by France’s contradictory relations with NATO and the United States – by De Gaulle’s personal strategic and diplomatic vision. As president, he placed French foreign and security policy on an entirely new footing and laid the foundations of the Fifth Republic. His initial strategy and the consequences of his decisions continue to influence France’s NATO policy to this day. This paper traces the historical roots of this distinctively French approach for a Hungarian audience, focusing primarily on political and diplomatic events, and drawing on both the secondary literature and archival sources.
