Absztrakt

On 25 April 1975, the victory of the Carnation Revolution in Portugal brought down the 42-year far-right fascist dictatorship established by António de Oliveira Salazar. This marked the beginning of a transformation in the country’s domestic and foreign policy, including the re-establishment of relations with the socialist Republic of Cuba. One of the most important stages of this process was the 1975 visit to Cuba by General Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, a leading member of the Armed Forces Movement, which temporarily controlled Portugal. The aim of this study is to examine this trip on the basis of relevant literature and primary sources in both Hungarian and foreign languages. It seeks to answer questions such as: Why was the Portuguese military officer invited by the Cubans? How did this visit influence Carvalho’s political thinking? What were the results of this trip? Finally, the study also considers how the two superpowers – the United States of America and the Soviet Union – reacted to the General’s visit to Cuba.
