A tanulmány az eskü szerepét vizsgálja az Újasszír Birodalom közigazgatási gyakorlatában, különös tekintettel az ún. adê-típusú szövegekre, vagyis azokra az esküformulákra, amelyek a király és a birodalom lojalitását biztosították különféle társadalmi csoportok és hivatalnokok körében. A szöveg részletes filológiai és történeti elemzésen keresztül mutatja be az eskük jogi, politikai és rituális funkcióit. A szerző kiemelten foglalkozik azzal, miként szolgáltak ezek a dokumentumok nemcsak politikai hűségnyilatkozatként, hanem a hatalom szimbolikus megerősítéseként is. Az eskük mágikus-retorikai nyelvezete, az isteni büntetések katalógusa és a rituális performativitás egymást erősítő elemei révén a tanulmány rávilágít arra, hogy az asszír uralom integrációs eszköze nem pusztán katonai és gazdasági, hanem vallási-ideológiai természetű is volt.
