Abstract

This article surveys the current state of classical language education—Latin and Greek—in Hungary. It presents in detail the opportunities, challenges, and institutional frameworks of both secondary and university-level instruction, as well as the impact of curricular changes and social demand. The analysis also considers the domestic tradition of classical philology, the training of teachers, and the international context. It emphasizes that the teaching of classical languages involves not only the transmission of scholarly knowledge but also the mediation of cultural heritage and the cultivation of critical thinking. The study seeks to highlight the contemporary significance and future prospects of this discipline.
