A tanulmány Nonnos Dionysiaca című eposzát vizsgálja abból a szempontból, hogyan alakul át benne Dionysos alakja a római költészetben kialakult numen-fogalom tükrében. A szerző azt elemzi, miként kapcsolódik össze az isteni jelenlét tapasztalata a térbeliség, a poétikai inspiráció és a maszkulinitás motívumaival. Különös figyelmet kap a Nílus mint mitikus színhely, amely a Múzsák otthonaként és a dionysosi erő megnyilvánulási területeként is értelmezhető. A tanulmány rámutat, hogy Nonnos poétikája tudatosan játszik a római numen-fogalom jelentésrétegeivel: Dionysos egyszerre jelenik meg geográfiai princípiumként, költői ihletként és maszk mögé rejtett hatalomként. E hármas szerepkör révén a szöveg újragondolja az isteni és emberi viszonyát a késő antik eposz retorikai keretei között.
